Facebook的崛起，让业内发现开放的应用开发平台所蕴含的巨大商业前景。Sun首席执行官Schwartz表示，拟建全球最大的Java应用程序商店，主要是面向PC用户（预计超过10亿）。运作方式是提供一个简单的网站，以便Java开发人员可以提交编写的软件，并对其进行统一评估，然后推荐给其它用户。在6月2日的旧金山JavaOne大会上Sun将公布更多关于Java应用程序商店的细节。
目前进入应用超市领域的公司包括Apple，Microsoft，Nokia等众多巨头，几乎都是针对手机用户。
